Anime Fangirling: Little Witch Academia

I took a little bit of a hiatus from anime after my last trip to Japan in 2015 so I’m a little behind on series. I’ve slowly been catching up with the help of VRV and Netlix. I really enjoyed Little Witch Academia on Netflix.  Created by Studio Trigger, it’s really sweet story of a girl coming into her own at school. Granted – the school is a little unusual and it is definitely an adventure for our main character, Akko. She wants to be a witch that makes people happy just like her hero, Shiny Chariot.

Akko is one of my favorite characters in recent anime shows. She is so determined to succeed that it never occurs to her to not try to do what she wants. She and her friends overcome obstacles that most other witches never do and they take you on quite the ride to jump those hurdles. Akko doesn’t come from a family of witches, so her wonder an awe at everything that is totally normal to her friends is really fun as you experience it with her. The magic and monsters are pretty adorable (except when they are scary) and their nod to technology in the LWA universe is a nice twist too. You’ll have to watch the whole series to get the real story on the tech.

Don’t be confused by how many versions there are on  Netflix. There is an OVA series and the TV series – just watch both, you won’t be sorry. The stories seem similar at first but they diverge quickly though. The full series is a lot of fun and I *literally* squealed during the final episode it was so great!
