A Washi Tape DIY Project

I have a bad habit of buying cute stationary and washi tape but never doing anything with the supplies. They are too cute to use but I’ve decided that they aren’t going to stay in the drawer anymore. I purchased most of my tapes on trips to Japan though some were purchased here in LA.

One of the ways to use them was to put them out in the open, stuck to things. I decided to cover an MDF panel with the tape so I could hang it up in cube. It was a really simple project so I am sharing with the internet. The total project time was around 30 minutes and most of that went to choosing the tape and finding my extra MDF panels.

Supplies:

  • Washi tape in complimentary patterns and colors
  • MDF board – I chose a small size, 5 inches by 5 inches
  • Scissors

Steps:

  1. Unwrap your MDF and your tape. I bought this panel at a little art supply store in here in Downtown. I purchased both washi tapes at Tokyo Hands, they are made by MT Tapes.

These rolls of tape feature pink and white stripes and manga panel inspired motifs.

2. Start by pulling strips off the rolls that are a little wider then the panels.

3. Begin sticking the strips along the panels and leaving a section on either side that is at least as wide as the depth of the panel. My panel is less than a quarter of an inch wide, so not much extra got used.

4. Continue sticking the tape on your panel until the whole thing is covered. Line up each tape or over lap them – the fun part is the laying out of the designs in complimentary ways.

5. Wrap the edges of the tape around to the back side of the panel.

6. All done and ready to hang!

What do you think of the final results? Since the washi is re-position-able, if you decide you don’t like the design or get bored with it, change is very easy. If you give this a try, leave a comment!
