Spoonflower swatches: make scrunchies

I have a ton of swatches for the designs in my shop on Spoonflower. They’ve been sitting around looking sad in a pile and I finally got some inspiration! SCRUNCHIES!!

They are, sadly, back in style for more than getting your hair out of the way to workout. They are simple to make and you can get one medium size scrunchie from one spoonflower swatch.

What you need:

  • An 8″ x 8″ fabric swatch
  • Skinny elastic – 1/4″ is best
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine

1) If you are using a swatch from spoonflower, trim the excess bits from the edges. The swatches often have a centimeter of white around the design. Unless you are confident you can sew along the lines, it needs to go.

2) Mark a line from the top to bottom of one side in the center. Cut along the line – you now have two 4″ x 8″ pieces

3) Place the right sides together and sew along the short edge, one centimeter wide. You will end up with a 4″ x ~15.5″ strip of fabric. Press the seam open.

4) Turn one 4″ end in 1 cm and press. You’ll need this at the end so don’t skip this step.

5) Fold the fabric in half, right sides together, long ways and press. You will now half a strip that is 2″ x ~15.25″

6) Sew the length of the open side closed with a centimeter allowance. Press open the seam.

7) You now have a tube and need to turn it right side out using your favorite method (bodkin, fabric turner, safety pin).

8) Find your elastic and cut a 7″ strip. You can make it a little longer if you have a lot of hair but it should stretch just a little less than your fabric.

9) Thread the elastic through your tube of fabric and sew the ends together. Your project should look a lot like a scrunchie now!

10) Gently tuck the unfinished end of the fabric into the turned in end of the tube over the elastic.

11) To finish the scrunchie off, you can either hand sew it shut or flatten the tube and sew a seam down the fabric to close the loop.

This is a really quick project to make and should not take very long. An afternoon will get you an arm load of scrunchies.
