Anime Fangirling: Wotakoi: Love Is Hard For Otaku

Wotakoi: Love Is Hard For Otaku is a new anime series I’ve been watching on Amazon Prime. If you are reading this site, and this article, you probably already know what the Japanese word, “otaku” means but for the “normies,” an Otaku is a nerd. Otaku are generally geeks for games, manga, and anime.

This show is great! It really does portray geek relationships well, even though it’s a little different than American geek culture.

When Narumi, an office lady who hides the fact that she is a yaoi fangirl, changes jobs, she is reunited with Hirotaka, her childhood friend who is attractive and skilled but is a hardcore gaming otaku. They decide to start dating for now, but being otaku, both of them are awkward so a serious romantic relationship is rather difficult for them…

The characters are so adorable and the “problems” they have as geeks in a corporate landscape and dating another nerd. I was lucky enough to find a partner who gets my nerdiness but still had to learn to navigate each other’s preferences.

The show is based on a web comic posted to Pixiv, The Japanese equivalent to Deviant Art, but I haven’t read it yet. Could be interesting, but I think I’ll end up liking the voicing and action on a show more than a comic.
