Breakfast Tacos

HomeState: Breakfast Tacos Win!

One of the weirdest points of contention on food with my California friends is breakfast burritos vs breakfast tacos. It’s a thing.

In Texas, we have breakfast tacos. They are everywhere and delicious. You can have one taco or five, depending on how hungry you are.

In California, we have have breakfast burritos. The burritos are everywhere and delicious. You can, *maybe,* eat one. Breakfast burritos are enormous.

Californians look at me like I’m nuts when I say I want breakfast tacos, but the burritos are out of hand. How does anyone eats that much, first thing in the morning? Clearly, it is only an issue for me.

One does get the urge for breakfast tacos and decent queso every once in a while. So where do former Texans to go get breakfast tacos in Los Angeles?

HomeState

HomeState has a couple of locations, the first one in Hollywood is lovely, if a bit crowded. The Highland Park location is also nice but is packed with hipsters. HomeState is the only place, for sure, that has Austin style breakfast tacos. Their tacos are awesome. But the food suffers a little from being in California. As a few examples… there is too much cilantro in the salsa, their other sauces are super duper spicy, they use brisket in their Frito pie instead of chili….And who puts cilantro in Guacamole? Californians…. Guacamole is simple, not spicy.

The decor is so close to my favorite places in Austin but the music (at least the last time I went) was not. Maybe this is only the Austin Industrial/Punk scene making itself heard from my past but a Texas style taco place should play The Revolting Cocks not a country & western cover of one of Nirvana’s greatest hits. When you grow up next to the “Live Music Capital of the World,” some pretty high expectations are set.

All in all, if you are a Texas expat in California and your tummy gets a craving, Home State is the place to go.
